NFT (Nutrient Film Technique) is one of the most productive and water-efficient hydroponic systems available, producing exceptional yields for their footprint when set up and managed correctly. In an NFT system, a thin, continuous film of nutrient solution flows along the base of sloped growing channels, bathing the lower portion of the root mass while the upper roots remain exposed to air — providing the oxygen-rich environment that drives vigorous hydroponic growth. We stock NFT systems and components for UK growers ready to experience the full potential of this proven technique.
How NFT Hydroponics Works
An NFT system recirculates nutrient solution from a reservoir through a series of sloped channels, typically 1–3m in length, before returning via gravity to the reservoir for re-pumping. The slope angle (typically 1:30 to 1:40) ensures the nutrient solution flows as a thin film — just 1–3mm deep at the channel base — providing constant root contact without creating anaerobic conditions. Plants are supported in net pots at regular intervals along the channels, with roots hanging down into the flowing film below.
The constant recirculation means NFT uses significantly less water and nutrient than run-to-waste systems — making it one of the most resource-efficient growing methods available. The absence of a bulky growing medium also reduces the risk of substrate-borne pathogens and simplifies system cleaning between cycles.
NFT System Management
Successful NFT growing requires attention to flow rate, solution temperature and EC management. The ideal flow rate produces a film 1–3mm deep in the channel — check by observing the return tube flow. Maintain solution temperature between 18–22°C to maximise dissolved oxygen. Check and adjust EC and pH daily, as the smaller solution volume in NFT systems changes more rapidly than larger reservoir setups.
