NFT spreader matting is a specialist capillary material designed specifically for use inside Nutrient Film Technique (NFT) growing channels. Placed along the base of each channel, spreader matting performs two critical functions: it helps distribute the thin film of nutrient solution evenly across the full width of the channel floor, and it provides a physical substrate against which roots can anchor and spread during the early establishment phase before root mass develops fully.
Why Spreader Matting Improves NFT Performance
In a bare NFT channel, nutrient solution can channel along the lowest point rather than spreading evenly across the width. This leaves areas of the channel floor dry, particularly at the edges, and can result in uneven root development where roots cluster along the central flow path. Spreader matting draws the nutrient film across its surface through capillary action, wetting the entire channel floor and ensuring every part of the root zone receives consistent moisture and nutrient contact.
The physical texture of spreader matting also gives young roots something to grip as they first extend into the channel from net pot cuttings or seedlings. This early anchorage is important in NFT systems where there is no solid substrate to support root development — without it, small plants can be disturbed by the flowing nutrient film before their root mass becomes self-supporting.
Installation and Replacement
Cut spreader matting to the length of your channel and lay flat along the channel floor before planting. Replace between each growing cycle — old matting accumulates root material, organic debris and potentially pathogenic biofilms that reduce system hygiene and risk contaminating the next crop. Clean and sterilise channels thoroughly before fitting fresh matting for each new cycle.
