High Pressure Sodium (HPS)
HPS produces a warm, red-orange spectrum (peaked around 590–620nm) that strongly promotes flowering and fruiting. A 600W HPS system is one of the most popular lighting choices for a 1.2m × 1.2m grow tent. The bulb’s output peaks within the first few hundred hours of use, so replace HPS bulbs every 6–12 months to maintain optimal light output. Digital ballasts allow dimming and offer improved bulb longevity over magnetic ballasts.
Metal Halide and CDM
Metal halide produces a broad, blue-white spectrum ideal for vegetative growth, promoting compact, bushy structure. Many growers use MH for veg and switch to HPS for flower. CDM (Ceramic Discharge Metal Halide) is a newer technology that combines a balanced full-spectrum output with excellent PAR efficiency — approaching LED performance in some configurations. CDM is particularly effective as a sole-source light for full-cycle growing.
