Description
An Anti-Siphon Valve 13mm is a critical safety and performance component for gravity-fed irrigation systems, AutoPot setups, and any growing system where a nutrient reservoir is positioned above the growing pots or growing area. Anti-siphon valves prevent back-siphoning — the reverse flow of nutrient solution that occurs when reservoir pressure and system gravity conspire to drain solution back through the irrigation lines rather than delivering it to the pots. Without this protection, siphoning can drain a reservoir completely into a single container, causing waterlogging, root damage, and the disruption of the entire growing system’s calibrated watering cycle.
The Siphon Problem in Gravity-Fed Systems
In any gravity-fed irrigation system, the column of liquid in the supply tubing creates a pressure differential between the reservoir and the growing containers. Under certain conditions — particularly when irrigation tubing runs downward from the reservoir before rising to the growing containers, or when air pressure changes disrupt the liquid column — siphoning can occur. The liquid in the tubing seeks to equalise the pressure by flowing toward the lower end, which may be the growing container rather than the reservoir outlet. This reverse flow can be slow and gradual, or it can be rapid and substantial depending on the height difference between components. Either way, the result is unintended delivery of large quantities of nutrient solution to containers at unpredictable times — causing overwatering, anaerobic root conditions, and nutrient solution waste that disrupts the precision of the irrigation programme. The 13mm anti-siphon valve interrupts this reverse flow by closing automatically when back-pressure is detected, allowing solution to flow in the correct direction only. At The Horticulture Company we recommend anti-siphon valves as standard components of any gravity-fed irrigation system.
Installation and 13mm Specification
Install in-line at the outlet of the nutrient reservoir, before the irrigation tubing runs to the growing containers. The 13mm bore matches the standard irrigation tubing size used in AutoPot and similar gravity-fed systems. Connects using push-fit or compression fittings compatible with 13mm tubing.
