Description
Carbon Dioxide Detector is an electronic CO₂ monitoring instrument that we have been supplying to UK commercial and serious hobby growers since 2017 for measuring carbon dioxide concentration in grow rooms and enclosed cultivation spaces. CO₂ is simultaneously the essential raw material for plant photosynthesis and a potentially dangerous asphyxiant in poorly ventilated spaces where CO₂ generators or fermentation sources are in use. A dedicated CO₂ detector serves both purposes — enabling growers to confirm that enrichment levels are within the productive 800–1,500 ppm target range, and providing a safety warning if CO₂ builds to dangerous concentrations above 5,000 ppm where human health risks arise.
CO₂ Monitoring for Both Performance and Safety
For growers using CO₂ enrichment — whether from bottled gas, CO₂ generators or fermentation bags — knowing the actual concentration in the canopy zone is essential for both effectiveness and safety. Plants cannot efficiently utilise CO₂ above approximately 1,500 ppm, and at very high concentrations (above 2,000 ppm) some growth inhibition can occur. Running enrichment to 1,200–1,500 ppm and confirming this with a calibrated detector ensures the enrichment strategy is actually delivering the target concentration rather than venting through gaps in the enclosure before reaching the canopy. The safety function is equally critical — gas CO₂ systems in sealed rooms can build concentrations that cause headaches, dizziness and loss of consciousness at 5,000 ppm+. A CO₂ detector positioned at breathing height in any room with active CO₂ injection provides essential protection for anyone entering the space during the growing period.
Placement, Calibration and Compatible CO₂ Sources
Position the detector at canopy height within the growing area where the CO₂ concentration that plants experience will be measured. Most electrochemical and NDIR CO₂ sensors require periodic calibration — consult the product instructions for calibration frequency and method. Pair with a CO₂ regulator and timer for bottled gas enrichment, No Mercy CO₂ Tabs for passive enrichment in small tents, or a dedicated CO₂ generator for large commercial spaces. Always ensure adequate ventilation is available for human access to any space where CO₂ enrichment is in use.
