Description
VitaLink Clay Pebbles are a professional-grade, pH-neutral growing medium that we have been supplying to UK hydroponic growers since 2017. Produced from kiln-fired expanded clay, these lightweight, porous balls are one of the most versatile and reusable substrates available for any hydroponic or aquaponic system. Their open structure provides exceptional oxygen retention at the root zone while allowing free drainage of nutrient solution — a combination that drives rapid root development and vigorous plant growth across all growing stages.
Why Clay Pebbles Are the Preferred Medium for Hydroponic Systems
Clay pebbles excel in systems where frequent or continuous nutrient solution delivery is used — including flood and drain, DWC, NFT, drip irrigation and autopot systems. The macroporous structure of each pebble holds a reservoir of air at all times, ensuring roots never suffocate even under heavy irrigation schedules. Between irrigation cycles, the pebbles drain freely, preventing stagnant water that would otherwise lead to root rot. VitaLink clay pebbles are manufactured to a consistent size and porosity, ensuring uniform performance across large containers and commercial trays. Their neutral pH eliminates the buffering issues seen with organic media and allows precise EC and pH management throughout the crop cycle.
Preparation, Use and Reuse
Before first use, rinse VitaLink Clay Pebbles thoroughly in clean water to remove dust and fine particles, then soak in pH-adjusted water (pH 5.5–6.5) for 12–24 hours. This pre-soak stabilises pH and fully hydrates the porous matrix. After each crop, used clay pebbles can be washed, sterilised and reused multiple times — one of the most cost-effective characteristics of clay as a growing medium. Use a dilute hydrogen peroxide solution or dedicated cleaning product to sterilise between crops. Suitable for use with all leading hydroponic nutrient ranges including VitaLink Hydro, SHOGUN and Plagron Hydro series.
