Description
Retro LED 720W is a high-output full-spectrum LED grow light that we have been supplying to UK indoor growers since 2017. The Retro 720W delivers commercial-grade photosynthetic photon flux density (PPFD) across a large coverage footprint using high-efficacy LED diodes in a proven full-cycle spectrum — suitable for both vegetative growth and maximum-yield flowering. At 720W, it occupies the upper tier of single-fixture LED power for serious hobby and small commercial cultivation, delivering the intensity required to fully saturate the canopy of a 1.2m x 1.2m to 1.5m x 1.5m growing area.
720W LED vs Equivalent HPS: The Efficiency and Heat Argument
A traditional 1000W HPS system — the closest HPS equivalent in terms of light output — produces substantially more heat per usable photon than the Retro 720W LED. HPS converts only 30–40% of electrical input into photosynthetically useful radiation; the remainder becomes heat that must be managed through extraction. LED technology converts 45–55% of input into useful PAR light, meaning the Retro 720W produces comparable or superior canopy PPFD to a 1000W HPS while consuming less electricity and generating significantly less heat. For grow rooms where temperature management is a challenge — particularly in summer months or in insulated spaces — this heat reduction translates directly into lower extraction requirements, reduced running costs and more stable growing conditions. The full-cycle spectrum of the Retro 720W covers both the blue-rich vegetative phase and the red-rich flowering phase in a single fixture, eliminating the lamp change required in HPS dual-spectrum programmes.
Coverage, Hanging Height and System Integration
Optimal coverage at recommended PPFD (600–900 µmol/m²/s) is approximately 1.2m x 1.2m for flowering, expandable to 1.5m x 1.5m at slightly reduced intensity for vegetative growth. Hang at 40–60cm from the canopy during flowering — adjust based on observed plant response. Include stepless dimming where provided for young plant or propagation use. Hang with rope ratchets rated for the fixture weight. Pair with a MaxiSwitch Pro timer for reliable photoperiod control.
