Why Calcium and Magnesium Deficiency Is So Common

Calcium and magnesium are secondary macronutrients that play a fundamental role in plant health. Calcium is essential for cell wall strength and the development of new root and leaf tissue. Magnesium sits at the centre of every chlorophyll molecule, making it directly responsible for photosynthesis. When either element is deficient — or when the ratio between them is off — plants display characteristic symptoms including pale or yellowing leaves, interveinal chlorosis, slow mid-season growth, and a visible lack of vigour after a strong early start.

Coco coir is particularly prone to calcium and magnesium lockout because the fibre has a high cation exchange capacity that naturally binds these ions. Growers using coco will often need a CalMag supplement from the first week of growth rather than just as a corrective measure later in the cycle.

How to Use Ionic CalMag Pro

Use Ionic CalMag Pro as a supplement alongside your primary base nutrient. Add it to your reservoir or mixing vessel before your base nutrient to ensure it dissolves fully. The recommended rate is 1–2ml per litre, adjusted upward if you are growing in coco or if deficiency symptoms are already visible. Check pH after adding all supplements, as calcium-magnesium solutions can affect the final pH of your nutrient mix.

For preventative use, apply from the first week of vegetative growth through to mid-flowering. Ionic CalMag Pro also works as a foliar spray for faster correction of visible deficiency — dilute to 0.5ml per litre and apply to the undersides of affected leaves. Available in 1 litre and 5 litre sizes.
