Coco coir has become the most popular growing substrate for UK indoor growers — and for excellent reason. Derived from the fibrous husks of coconut shells, coco coir offers a unique combination of moisture retention, excellent drainage, natural pH buffering and support for beneficial microbial life that makes it ideal for both hydroponic and soil-free growing. Whether you grow in a run-to-waste dripper system, hand-water daily or use an Autopot gravity-fed setup, coco coir delivers consistently exceptional results.
Why Coco Coir Outperforms Soil for Indoor Growing
Unlike soil, coco coir contains no native nutrients — giving growers complete control over the nutritional programme from day one. It has a naturally loose, fibrous structure that maintains excellent air porosity even after months of watering, preventing the compaction that reduces oxygen availability in soil grows over time. Coco can be watered to saturation without drowning roots, provided it is given adequate time to partially dry between irrigations — a forgiving quality that new growers particularly appreciate.
Coco’s water retention capacity is approximately 40–60% by volume when properly saturated, with the remaining volume occupied by air pockets. This ratio provides roots with both the moisture and oxygen access that drives rapid, vigorous growth — often producing vegetative growth rates and yields comparable to pure hydroponic systems at a fraction of the system complexity.
Buffered vs Unbuffered Coco
Raw coco coir contains naturally occurring sodium, potassium and magnesium ions that compete with calcium uptake. Quality pre-buffered coco has been pre-treated with a calcium solution to displace these ions — ensuring that when you apply your nutrient solution, the coco does not strip calcium from it before it reaches the roots. Always use buffered, washed coco for indoor growing, and pair it with a coco-specific nutrient containing elevated Ca and Mg.
We have been supplying premium coco coir to UK growers since 2017. Browse our full coco range below.
