Description
Atami Washed and Buffered Coco 50 Litre is a premium coco coir growing medium that has undergone Atami’s full preparation process — thorough washing to remove excess salts and sodium, then buffering with calcium and magnesium to stabilise the medium’s cation exchange sites before it reaches your growing room. This dual preparation step makes Atami coco one of the most reliable and grower-ready coco substrates available in the UK market, eliminating the plant health problems that poorly prepared coco consistently causes.
The Importance of Washing and Buffering Coco
Raw coco coir is a by-product of coconut processing and contains naturally high levels of sodium and potassium from the coconut husk. Sodium is toxic to plant roots at elevated concentrations, and excess potassium interferes with calcium and magnesium uptake through competitive ion inhibition. Washing the coco with clean water removes these excess ions and brings sodium and potassium to acceptable levels. But washing alone is not sufficient. Coco’s fibrous structure has many cation exchange sites — binding points that can hold and release mineral ions. After washing, these sites are largely empty and will aggressively adsorb calcium from any nutrient solution applied to the medium. Buffering pre-saturates these sites with calcium and magnesium, neutralising this adsorption effect so the calcium in your first nutrient solution goes to plant roots rather than being locked into the growing medium. Atami applies both treatments rigorously. At The Horticulture Company, we recommend their washed and buffered coco to growers who want a substrate that performs consistently from day one without the initial CalMag correction period that lesser-prepared coco requires.
Structure, Compatibility, and Use
Atami’s coco is produced from quality coco fibres with the particle size graded for good moisture retention and aeration balance. It is suitable for all coco-specific nutrient programmes including CANNA Coco, Plagron Coco A&B, and Ionic Coco. Use in any coco-compatible growing style — hand-watering, dripper systems, or flood-and-drain. The 50-litre bag fills most standard mid-sized growing containers with room to spare, and its preparation quality means you can put plants in with confidence from the outset of the growing cycle.
