When a UK heatwave hits, grow room temperatures can climb from perfect to plant-killing in a single afternoon. This guide explains exactly what temperature your grow room should be, how to spot heat stress early, and the ten most effective ways to keep your grow cool when the weather turns against you.

British summers used to be something indoor growers could largely ignore. Not any more. With 30°C-plus heatwaves now arriving most summers, controlling grow room temperature during a heatwave has become an essential skill for every UK grower. Indoor gardens are especially vulnerable: grow lights add heat to a room that is already hot, houses hold on to warmth well into the night, and the lofts, spare rooms, and garages where most grow tents live are often the hottest spaces in the building.

The good news is that a heatwave doesn’t have to cost you your crop. With the right adjustments — most of them free or inexpensive — you can keep your canopy in a safe range right through the hottest week of the year. What Is the Ideal Grow Room Temperature?

The ideal grow room temperature is 24–28°C with the lights on and 18–22°C with the lights off. Plants under LED lighting prefer the warmer end of that range, because LEDs radiate less heat directly onto the leaf surface than HPS lamps. Once your canopy passes 30°C, photosynthesis slows and problems begin; sustained temperatures above 32–35°C cause visible stress and real damage to yield and quality.

Two other numbers matter just as much during hot weather. Keep the difference between lights-on and lights-off temperatures under about 8°C to avoid stressing plants and encouraging stretch. And watch your root zone: nutrient solution and growing media should stay at 18–22°C — once a hydroponic reservoir passes 24°C, dissolved oxygen drops sharply and root diseases such as pythium become far more likely.

Work through these roughly in order — the first three are free and make the biggest difference of all.

1. Run Your Lights at Night

The single most effective change you can make costs nothing: flip your light schedule so the lights run through the coolest hours, roughly 9pm to 9am for a 12/12 flowering cycle, and the dark period falls during the heat of the day. Your lights stop adding heat exactly when the weather is hottest, and instead run when intake air might be 10°C cooler. Make the switch by extending one dark period rather than shortening it — plants handle a longer night far better than a longer day, particularly in flower.

2. Dim Your Lights or Raise Them

Most modern LED fixtures have a dimmer — use it. Dropping from 100% to 70–80% power during the hottest days significantly reduces heat load, and you lose far less yield to slightly lower light levels than you would to a week of heat stress. Plants also need less light when temperatures are outside their optimal range, because photosynthesis is already running below capacity. If your light has no dimmer, raise it 20–30cm to reduce the radiant heat reaching the canopy.

3. Maximise Your Extraction

Your extraction system is doing the heavy lifting, so make sure nothing is holding it back. Run the extraction fan at full speed during lights-on, check the carbon filter isn’t clogged (a saturated filter can cut airflow dramatically), keep ducting runs short and straight, and make sure your passive intakes are fully open — extraction can only pull in as much air as the intakes let through. If your fan is borderline for your tent size at the best of times, a heatwave is when it shows; upgrading to an EC fan gives you more headroom and quieter, controllable speed.

4. Draw Intake Air From the Coolest Place You Can

Remember: your tent can never be cooler than its intake air. During a heatwave, think about where that air is coming from. North-facing rooms, hallways, and under-stair spaces stay cooler than sun-facing rooms; ground floors stay cooler than lofts. Ducting your intake from a cooler room — or simply opening the grow room door and window at night to flush out stored heat — can drop your baseline by several degrees. Keep the room around the tent dark and shaded during the day: close curtains and blinds on sun-facing windows.

5. Add Circulation Fans (But Don’t Overdo It)

Oscillating circulation fans don’t lower the temperature, but they strip away the hot, humid boundary layer that builds up around leaves, letting plants cool themselves through transpiration far more effectively. Aim for a gentle rustle across the whole canopy — leaves moving, not thrashing. Air movement that’s too aggressive causes wind burn and stresses plants that are already working hard.

6. Keep Humidity in the Right Zone

Heat and humidity work as a pair. In hot, dry air, plants transpire too fast and close their stomata to protect themselves — which also shuts down cooling and growth. In hot, humid air, transpiration can’t evaporate and plants effectively cook. During a heatwave aim for roughly 55–65% relative humidity in veg and 45–55% in flower. If the air is very dry, a light misting of pathways (never the plants in flower) or a humidifier helps plants keep their stomata open; if it’s muggy, extra extraction is your friend. High night-time humidity plus heat is prime botrytis territory in late flower — don’t let the dark period get swampy.

7. Protect the Root Zone

Air temperature gets the attention, but root zone temperature quietly does the damage. In hydro and autopot systems, keep reservoirs off warm floors, out of the light, and ideally insulated. Top up with cooler water, run air stones generously (warm water holds less oxygen), and consider a water chiller if your reservoir regularly passes 24°C — it’s the difference between healthy white roots and a pythium outbreak in a hot week. Frozen water bottles rotated through the reservoir work as a short-term emergency fix. In soil and coco, fabric pots shed heat better than plastic, and raising pots off a hot floor helps more than you’d think.

8. Water Smarter

Hot plants drink more — sometimes double their usual intake. Check pots daily (twice daily in a serious heatwave) and water early in the lights-on period so plants face the hottest hours fully hydrated. Slightly reduce nutrient strength while temperatures are high: plants drinking heavily take up proportionally more feed, and heat stress plus nutrient burn is a miserable combination. Keep an eye on EC in reservoirs, as heavy transpiration concentrates the solution.

9. Automate With a Fan Speed or Climate Controller

A thermostatic fan speed controller turns your extraction into a self-managing system: it ramps the fan up as temperature climbs and back down when things cool off, holding your target temperature day and night without you standing over a thermometer. During a heatwave this matters most in the afternoon peak — exactly when you might be out at work. If you’re running EC fans, a digital climate controller gives you precise temperature and humidity targets in one unit.

10. Air Conditioning — the Fix That Always Works

When the air going into your tent is simply too hot, the only remaining option is to cool that air. A portable air conditioner in the room around the tent is the heatwave fail-safe: it lowers your intake temperature directly, which nothing else on this list can do once the whole house is hot. Vent the AC’s exhaust out of a window (not into the room — it will fight itself), size it generously for the space, and remember AC also dries the air, so keep an eye on humidity. Evaporative “swamp” coolers are cheaper but add moisture, making them a poor choice for flowering rooms in a muggy UK heatwave.
