Why Root Zone Temperature Is Critical for Propagation

Root initiation and early root development are highly temperature-dependent processes. Below 18°C, rooting slows dramatically; below 15°C, it effectively stops. In UK grow rooms where ambient temperatures can fall during lights-off cycles or in poorly insulated spaces during winter, maintaining adequate propagation temperature without a dedicated heat source is unreliable. The heat mat provides gentle, consistent warmth directly to the base of your propagation tray, maintaining root zone temperatures of 22–28°C regardless of ambient air temperature.

The insulated base mat beneath the heat mat serves two purposes: it prevents heat loss downward into the surface the propagation setup is sitting on, improving the efficiency of the heat mat by directing warmth upward into the tray; and it protects temperature-sensitive surfaces from prolonged heat contact that could cause damage over extended propagation periods.

Setup and Temperature Management

Place the insulated mat on your propagation shelf, position the heat mat on top, and place your propagation tray directly on the heat mat. For temperature precision, use with a thermostat plugged between the heat mat and the wall socket to maintain a consistent 24–26°C at the base of the tray. Monitor rooting medium temperature with a thermometer rather than air temperature alone, as the two can differ significantly in a heated propagation setup.
