Description
The Venture Metal Halide 400W lamp is a high-intensity discharge grow lamp in the metal halide spectrum — the blue-white light source that produces the vegetative growth response that makes MH lamps the professional choice for the vegetative and structural development phase of indoor growing. Metal halide lamps produce a broad spectrum with a strong blue component (400–500nm) that drives compact, branching vegetative growth with short internodal spacing and thick, structurally robust stems — exactly the plant architecture that supports productive flowering performance when plants are switched to bloom.
Why Metal Halide Remains Relevant for Vegetative Growing
LED technology has made significant inroads into the flowering phase of indoor growing, where its energy efficiency and full-spectrum output have proven highly competitive with HPS. In the vegetative phase, metal halide lamps continue to deliver a compelling performance argument. The specific blue-spectrum output of MH lamps triggers photomorphogenic responses — particularly the production of compact internodal spacing and heavy stem diameter — that blue-rich LED panels are beginning to replicate but have not universally matched in the commercial growing environment. At 400W, the Venture MH lamp is appropriate for grow spaces from 1.0m x 1.0m up to 1.2m x 1.2m as a primary vegetative light. It produces significantly more heat than equivalent LED panels, which means environmental management requirements are higher — but in grow rooms where temperature maintenance during the vegetative phase is not a limiting factor, the light output intensity is competitive. We stock a full range of grow lamps including Venture MH at The Horticulture Company, and advise on the best lighting choice for each customer’s specific growing situation and objectives.
Ballast Compatibility and Lamp Specifications
The Venture 400W MH lamp requires a compatible 400W metal halide ballast — do not attempt to run on a HPS ballast of the same wattage, as the ignition and operating voltage requirements are different. Use with a suitable MH-compatible reflector hood for optimum light distribution. Replace lamps at the end of their rated lifespan when light output has degraded and spectral quality has shifted to maintain optimum vegetative performance.
