Description
The 16mm Grommet is the fitting that goes through the tank wall to connect the mainline hosepipe to the nutrient reservoir. Without it, the hole in the tank wall leaks; with it correctly fitted, the connection is watertight and the system holds nutrient solution at the correct level without seeping.
Fit the grommet through the pre-drilled hole in the Autopot tank wall, then push the 16mm hosepipe barb through it. The rubber seal compresses around the barb and the tank wall, creating a pressure-free watertight joint suited to the low-pressure gravity-fed Autopot system. No thread sealant, no jubilee clips — just a correctly sized grommet in the right hole.
Keep a spare. Grommets are small and can be lost during tank cleaning or system reconfiguration. Finding you need one at setup time and not having it delays the whole build.
Grommets rely on a snug fit to work — too large a hole in the tank wall and the seal won’t compress properly around the barb, leaving a slow weep that’s easy to miss until you find the tank sitting lower than expected; too small and forcing the grommet through risks tearing the rubber before it’s even fitted. Use the pre-drilled hole size that matches the standard Autopot tank fittings rather than cutting your own if you’re working with a non-standard tank, since an incorrectly sized hole is very difficult to correct after the fact. When disassembling a system for cleaning or storage, remove grommets carefully and store them somewhere they won’t perish or get lost — rubber components left loose in a shed or damp storage area over an off-season are a common reason growers find themselves needing a replacement right when they’re trying to set back up.
Keep a couple of spare grommets in your parts box alongside other small Autopot fittings — they’re inexpensive and easy to lose track of individually, but essential to have on hand the moment a tank needs reassembling.
