Description

CoolShade 150mm is a compact, lightweight cooltube-style reflector that allows a 150mm inline fan to draw cooled air directly past an HPS or CMH lamp, significantly reducing the heat radiated into the growing canopy by extracting the high-temperature air surrounding the lamp before it reaches the plants below. We have been recommending cooltube and coolshade systems to UK HPS growers since 2017 as an effective and proven way to manage the primary heat challenge of high-intensity discharge lighting — allowing lights to be positioned closer to the canopy without heat stress while maintaining full photon intensity at plant level.

How the CoolShade 150mm Solves the HPS Heat Problem

High-pressure sodium lamps generate a significant amount of heat from their arc tube and outer glass envelope — typically around 50% of their electrical input is released as infrared (heat) radiation. In a standard reflector, this heat radiates directly downward into the canopy and upward into the grow space, raising both canopy and ambient temperatures. The CoolShade design encloses the lamp in a sealed air channel — the inline fan connected to the 150mm port draws cool air in at one end, the air passes along the length of the lamp, picking up the convective and radiant heat from the lamp envelope, and exits at the other end through a separate exhaust port. This active cooling removes the bulk of the lamp’s heat output from the growing environment before it affects plant tissue, allowing the light to be positioned significantly closer to the canopy than in an open reflector — increasing the photon density delivered to the plants while reducing heat stress rather than increasing it.

How to Install and Use the CoolShade 150mm

Connect your 150mm inline fan to the CoolShade inlet port using standard ducting and a METU clamp. Route the exhaust port through a separate duct to the extraction point, or connect into your main exhaust system. Fit the lamp into the lamp holder inside the CoolShade and connect to your ballast as normal. Hang at the appropriate height for your grow space. Run the cooling fan continuously during lights-on periods. For maximum benefit, ensure the CoolShade is sealed airtight at the lamp holder ends to prevent hot air from leaking back into the grow space.
