Description
E40 to CDM Adapter is an electrical lamp fitting adapter that converts an E40 (Edison screw, 40mm diameter) lamp socket to accept CDM (Ceramic Discharge Metal Halide) lamps with a PGZ12 or compatible CDM-specific base. We have been supplying lighting accessories and adapters to UK growers since 2017 as the practical solutions that allow growers to upgrade, modify, or make the best use of existing lighting infrastructure without replacing complete luminaire housings unnecessarily.
Why the E40 to CDM Adapter Is a Useful Grow Room Accessory
CDM (Ceramic Discharge Metal Halide) lamps represent a significant advancement over older mercury vapour and standard metal halide technology — delivering a full-spectrum output that is closer to natural daylight, with improved efficiency, longer lamp life, and a colour rendering index that benefits plant growth by covering the full photosynthetically active radiation spectrum from blue through red. However, CDM lamps use a different lamp base to the standard E40 socket used in many existing reflector and luminaire housings. The E40 to CDM adapter bridges this compatibility gap, allowing a CDM lamp to be used in a luminaire with an E40 socket without the need to replace the full fitting. This adapter is a straightforward, cost-effective way to upgrade the light source in existing equipment. Always use with a ballast rated and compatible for CDM lamp operation — standard HPS or MH ballasts are not compatible with CDM lamps and will not provide the correct operating conditions for optimum lamp performance and life.
How to Fit the E40 to CDM Adapter
Ensure all power is disconnected before handling any lamp fitting or adapter. Screw the E40 thread end of the adapter into the existing E40 socket of your reflector or luminaire. Insert the CDM lamp into the CDM socket end of the adapter, aligning the lamp base pins correctly before engaging. Tighten gently — do not overtighten CDM lamp bases as the ceramic construction of CDM lamps can be damaged by excessive force. Restore power only after the lamp is fully and correctly seated. Verify lamp ignition and stable operation before leaving the system unattended.
