Description
Garland XL Unheated Propagator is a generously sized propagation tray and clear lid system designed for rooting cuttings and germinating seeds without supplementary heat. We have been stocking Garland propagators since 2017 and the XL unheated model is consistently popular with UK growers who manage their clone room temperature through ambient conditions or a seedling mat rather than a heated base.
Why Choose an Unheated Propagator
Not every grower needs a heated propagator. If your propagation area is already maintained above 20°C through ambient heating or environmental controls, an unheated propagator gives you all the humidity retention and physical protection of a heated unit at a lower cost and without the risk of overheating delicate cuttings. The XL size accommodates a larger number of clones or seedlings in a single tray, making it ideal for batch propagation during a busy growing season.
The tall, clear vented lid creates a controlled microclimate around your cuttings, retaining moisture and humidity while still allowing airflow adjustment through the adjustable vents. This balance is critical for successful rooting — too much humidity without airflow encourages mould and damping off; too little causes excessive water loss through the leaves before roots have established.
Setup and Best Practices
Fill the tray with a quality propagation medium such as rockwool cubes, Root Riot plugs, or perlite and vermiculite mix. Take healthy cuttings from the vegetative mother plant, dip in rooting gel, and place in your chosen medium. Keep the lid on, adjust vents to roughly half-open, and mist the inside of the lid once or twice daily to maintain humidity without waterlogging the medium.
Pair with a propagation light like the SunBlaster LED or T5 strip for 18–20 hours of gentle light per day. Once roots are visible through the medium or at the tray drain holes, begin acclimatising cuttings to lower humidity before transferring to your main growing system.
