What Worm Castings Do for Soil Biology and Plant Nutrition

Worm castings are not simply composted organic matter — they are a living material. As organic matter passes through the earthworm gut, it is transformed by digestive enzymes and the worm’s gut microbiome into a stable humus compound with a unique biological and chemical profile. The castings contain a diverse consortium of beneficial bacteria, fungi and actinomycetes that, when introduced to the growing medium, establish a biologically active root zone capable of mineralising organic nutrients, solubilising phosphorus and suppressing pathogenic organisms through competitive exclusion. The humic and fulvic acid content improves cation exchange capacity, water retention and soil aggregation.
