Description
Perlite is an expanded volcanic glass growing medium used across all styles of indoor and outdoor cultivation as a drainage and aeration additive, standalone hydroponic growing medium, or propagation substrate. We have been supplying horticultural perlite to UK growers since 2017 as one of the most universally useful and cost-effective growing media components available to the cultivator — suitable for beginners and experienced growers alike.
What Perlite Is and Why It Works
Perlite is created by heating volcanic obsidian glass to extremely high temperatures, causing it to expand into lightweight, porous white granules with a highly irregular surface structure. This manufacturing process creates a material that is chemically inert, pH neutral, and capable of holding air and water simultaneously within its porous structure. When added to soil or coco coir, perlite opens up the growing medium — creating macro-pores that improve drainage and draw fresh air into the root zone after each watering event. This improved air-to-water ratio is one of the most important factors in healthy root development.
In coco growing, a 20–30% perlite addition to straight coco creates the improved drainage and aeration profile that high-frequency, high-volume feeding approaches require. In soil growing, perlite prevents compaction over successive watering cycles and maintains oxygen availability at the root zone throughout the growing cycle.
Standalone and Multi-Purpose Applications
Coarse perlite can also be used as a standalone propagation medium in cloning setups, where its drainage and aeration characteristics provide excellent conditions for root initiation without the water retention that can lead to stem rot in cuttings. In deep water culture and ebb-and-flow systems, perlite can serve as a sole growing medium in net pots, providing physical support and excellent root zone oxygenation.
Available in various grades — coarse perlite for growing medium amendment, fine perlite for propagation. An essential component for any serious indoor growing programme. Pair with buffered coco coir for a premium coco perlite growing medium, or mix into soil for improved drainage and aeration.
