Algae requires light to grow — even brief, repeated exposure of a clear or translucent container to grow room lighting provides sufficient energy for algae to establish and colonise the stored nutrient solution. Algae growth in a nutrient reservoir competes for minerals, alters pH, and creates organic matter that harbours pathogens. The opaque black material of these buckets blocks all light penetration, eliminating algae growth and maintaining the quality of stored nutrient solution.
