Description

GT 424 BLACK TOP PLATE is the light-excluding replacement lid for the Nutriculture GT 424 four-site NFT growing system. We have been supplying Nutriculture system components and spares to UK growers since 2017, and keeping a replacement top plate on hand is one of the simplest ways to ensure your NFT system can continue operating if the original plate cracks, warps, or is damaged during cleaning or maintenance.

The GT 424 System and Why Top Plate Condition Matters

The Nutriculture GT 424 is a four-site NFT (Nutrient Film Technique) system in which a thin film of nutrient solution flows continuously over the roots suspended in net pots held by the top plate. The plate performs two critical functions: it holds the root basket assemblies securely in position over the nutrient film channel, and it excludes light from the reservoir and channel to prevent algae growth. A compromised plate — cracked around net pot holes, warped at the edges, or discoloured — allows light entry that triggers algae development in the nutrient stream. Algae consumes dissolved oxygen, blocks spray nozzles and drain holes, and coats root surfaces with a film that inhibits nutrient uptake. Replacing the top plate at the first sign of damage is significantly less costly than dealing with an algae outbreak mid-cycle.

Maintenance Between Cycles

Remove the GT 424 black top plate at each cycle changeover and clean with a dilute bleach solution (1%) or Oxy-Plus rinse, paying particular attention to the net pot hole edges where organic residue and algae accumulate. Rinse thoroughly with clean water before refitting. Inspect for cracks by holding the plate up to a light source — even hairline cracks allow sufficient light for algae establishment in warm conditions. The black material absorbs heat from grow room lamps, so check for warping at the plate edges during hot summer months when thermal stress is greatest.

Keep the GT 424 Black Top Plate alongside replacement net pots, GT 424 pump spares, and Nutriculture reservoir cleaning solution for a fully maintained NFT system ready for every new growing cycle.
