Description

Hydrotops Bactivator is a concentrated beneficial bacteria and fungi inoculant from Hydrotops, designed to establish and maintain a thriving community of plant-supporting microorganisms in the root zone of soil, coco and organic growing media. We have been recommending Hydrotops Bioponic products to UK growers since 2017, and Bactivator represents the biological cornerstone of the Bioponic growing approach — building the microbial life that makes the rest of the programme work effectively.

Building a Living Root Zone

The Bioponic philosophy is rooted in the principle that a biologically active root zone produces better plants than a sterile mineral environment alone. Bactivator introduces a diverse range of beneficial bacteria and mycorrhizal fungi species that colonise root surfaces and the surrounding growing medium, creating a living microbial community that performs several critical functions simultaneously. Beneficial bacteria fix atmospheric nitrogen, solubilise phosphorus and other minerals into plant-available forms, and produce plant growth-promoting compounds including auxins and cytokinins that stimulate root development and vegetative growth.

Mycorrhizal fungi extend the effective root surface area dramatically — fungal hyphae penetrate soil and coco particles that roots cannot reach, accessing water and mineral reserves that would otherwise be unavailable to the plant. This extended foraging network is particularly valuable in pot-based growing where root volume is constrained by container size.

Application and Compatibility

Introduce Bactivator at transplanting and apply regularly through the vegetative and early flowering stages to maintain an active microbial population. Can be applied as a root drench or mixed into the growing medium at planting. Note that Bactivator is not compatible with hydrogen peroxide or strongly bactericidal products — use a biological or Bioponic approach consistently rather than mixing with sterilisation treatments.
