IWS COPPER ROOT CONTROL DISC 250MM

Description

IWS Copper Root Control Disc 250mm is a passive root management insert that we have been supplying to UK hydroponic growers since 2017 for use in IWS flood and drain systems and compatible pot-based growing setups. The copper disc sits at the base of the growing container and uses the natural antimicrobial and root-pruning properties of copper ions to prevent root circling and pathogen colonisation at the most vulnerable point in the root zone — the drainage zone where excess moisture collects and anaerobic conditions are most likely to develop.

How Copper Root Control Works

When roots encounter a copper surface, the ionic interaction between copper and root tissue triggers a natural response — roots are chemically deterred from crossing or extending along the copper boundary rather than circling the container wall as they would in a standard pot. This air-pruning-by-chemistry effect stimulates the development of new lateral root branches behind the copper contact point, progressively increasing the total root surface area and the density of the root network within the container. Simultaneously, copper ions in the immediate contact zone create an environment hostile to Pythium, Fusarium and other water-borne root pathogens that colonise drainage zones and root tips. The combined effect is a denser, healthier, more pathogen-resistant root system with improved nutrient uptake efficiency relative to roots allowed to circle unchecked.

Installation and Sizing

The 250mm disc fits IWS standard 25-litre pots and compatible containers of the same base diameter. Place the disc flat in the base of the pot before filling with growing medium. No adhesive or fixing is required — the weight of the substrate holds the disc in position. The disc is reusable across multiple crop cycles — clean between uses with a dilute citric acid solution to remove mineral deposits that can reduce copper ion release over time. Pair with an IWS flood and drain system, clay pebbles and a complete hydroponic nutrient programme for a professionally managed growing setup.
