Description
Mills Vitalize is a professional silica supplement that we have been recommending to UK growers since 2017 as a foundational component of the Mills Nutrients programme. Silica (silicon dioxide) is the second most abundant element in the Earth’s crust but is absent or present only in trace quantities in most hydroponic nutrient solutions. Plants that receive adequate silica through their growing cycle develop significantly thicker, stronger cell walls — a measurable structural improvement that translates into better stem strength, improved resistance to pest and pathogen attack, enhanced heat and drought tolerance and ultimately greater support for heavy flower development in the final weeks of bloom.
Why Silica Supplementation Is Worth Adding to Every Programme
Silicon is taken up by plants and deposited in epidermal cells as a rigid, glass-like layer of hydrated silica. This deposit hardens the outer surfaces of leaves and stems against physical damage and creates a physical barrier that aphids, spider mites and fungal pathogens find significantly more difficult to penetrate than untreated plant tissue. In controlled trials, silica-supplemented plants consistently show measurably greater stem diameter, reduced stem lodging under heavy flower weight and lower rates of powdery mildew establishment. The structural benefits compound over the growing cycle — a plant that starts silica supplementation at propagation and continues through to late flowering has fully silicified cell walls across all tissue, not just in areas where supplementation began later. Mills Vitalize is formulated in a highly soluble potassium silicate form that is immediately plant-available and compatible with standard reservoir pH management.
Application Rate, pH Considerations and Programme Integration
Use Mills Vitalize at 0.5–1 ml per litre throughout all growth stages from propagation to late flowering. Always add silica to plain water first before adding any other nutrients — silica reacts with calcium and magnesium in concentrated form to form insoluble precipitates. After diluting silica, add other nutrients and adjust pH last. Silica raises reservoir pH and requires additional pH-down correction. Compatible with the full Mills nutrient range: pair with Mills Basis A&B, Mills C4 and Mills Ultimate PK for a complete, silica-supported Mills programme.
