Why Calcium and Magnesium Are Critical in Coco and Soft Water Grows

Calcium and magnesium deficiencies are among the most common nutrient problems UK coco growers encounter, and for good reason. Coco coir has a naturally high cation exchange capacity that preferentially binds calcium and magnesium ions, making them unavailable to plant roots regardless of how much calcium and magnesium is present in the nutrient solution. This means coco growers must supplement these elements at higher rates than soil or hydroponic growers to ensure adequate plant-available levels in the root zone. UK tap water in many regions is also relatively soft, meaning it provides less baseline calcium than the hard water that some nutrient formulas are calibrated for. Mills CaliMag provides a chelated calcium and magnesium formulation with supplemental nitrogen that supports the rapid absorption and utilisation of both elements. Chelation ensures the calcium and magnesium stay soluble and plant-available across the pH range used in coco (5.8–6.2) without precipitating out of solution or competing excessively with other cations.

How to Use Mills CaliMag in Your Feeding Programme

Use Mills CaliMag at 1–3 ml per litre throughout vegetative growth and flowering, adjusting based on your water hardness and substrate type. In coco, use at the higher end of this range from the first watering. In soft water regions (below 200 ppm baseline hardness), begin supplementation from seedling stage. Add CaliMag to your reservoir before other nutrient components and mix thoroughly before adding base nutrients. Maintain solution pH at 5.8–6.2 in coco and check EC after all additions. Continue use right through to flush stage in coco to prevent deficiency in late flower.
