Description
VitaLink Clay Pebbles are expanded lightweight clay aggregate — one of the most versatile and long-established growing media in hydroponic cultivation. Kiln-fired at high temperature from natural clay, the pellets expand to form a porous, stable structure with a hard outer shell and an air-filled interior, creating a growing medium that is chemically inert, pH-neutral, reusable, and provides excellent root-zone oxygenation.
Clay pebbles are the substrate of choice for a wide range of hydroponic systems: deep water culture net pots, flood and drain systems, Dutch buckets, and recirculating drip systems all commonly use clay pebbles as the root-support medium. Their large particle size creates a highly aerated root environment with rapid drainage and excellent oxygen diffusion to root surfaces — critical for the fast root development and efficient nutrient uptake that high-performance hydroponic growing demands.
Before first use, rinse thoroughly and soak for 24 hours to stabilise pH and remove any remaining fine clay particles. They can be cleaned, sterilised, and reused across multiple grow cycles, making them highly cost-effective over time. Also widely used as a drainage layer at the bottom of pots in soil or coco grows, and blended with coco at 30-40% to improve drainage in large containers. Available at The Horticulture Company alongside the full VitaLink nutrient and substrate range.
