CFL grow lights (Compact Fluorescent Lamps) offer an energy-efficient, low-heat solution for propagation, seedling development and small-space growing. While they have been largely superseded by LED for larger setups, CFLs retain a loyal following for their simplicity, low upfront cost and suitability for very small grow spaces and cloning areas. At The Horticulture Company, we stock a selection of CFL grow lights for growers who need a straightforward, reliable light source.
CFL Spectrum Options
CFL grow bulbs are available in two main colour temperatures. Blue-spectrum CFLs (6400K daylight) are ideal for vegetative growth, cloning and seedlings — they promote compact, bushy development without stretching. Red-spectrum CFLs (2700K warm white) are better suited to flowering and can be used throughout a small full-cycle grow when combined with the blue option.
For propagation, a single 125W or 200W blue CFL positioned 20–30cm above a humidity dome provides excellent light levels for cuttings and germinating seeds without excessive heat. At this stage, the gentle light output of a CFL is actually preferable to high-intensity systems.
CFL Fittings and Reflectors
CFL bulbs require a compatible lamp holder with an E40 or bayonet fitting depending on the model. A basic reflector hood directs light downward efficiently and prevents wasted output. We stock both bare bulbs and complete CFL units with integrated reflector and fitting — ideal for growers wanting a ready-to-use solution.
While LED propagation lights have become increasingly popular, quality CFLs remain a cost-effective and reliable choice for cloning and seedling work. Our team has been recommending appropriate lighting solutions for UK growers since 2017. Browse our CFL range below.
