Description
Azos 2oz (56g) is a concentrated nitrogen-fixing bacteria inoculant containing Azospirillum brasilense that we have been supplying to UK growers since 2017. Azos provides a biological source of fixed nitrogen to the plant root zone — A. brasilense bacteria colonise root surfaces and fix atmospheric nitrogen gas into plant-available ammonium ions, supplementing the mineral nitrogen in your nutrient programme with a renewable biological source. In addition to nitrogen fixation, Azos bacteria produce plant growth hormones including indole-3-acetic acid (IAA), a natural auxin that promotes root elongation and lateral root development.
The Dual Role of Azospirillum: Nitrogen Fixation and Root Stimulation
Azospirillum brasilense was one of the first bacterial species to be extensively studied as a plant growth-promoting rhizobacterium (PGPR), with decades of peer-reviewed research documenting its effects in both field and controlled-environment agriculture. The nitrogen fixation activity of A. brasilense supplements mineral nitrogen in the root zone — a particularly valuable function in organic and low-input growing programmes where nitrogen sources are predominantly organic and slow-release. More immediately observable in a grow room context, the IAA production by established A. brasilense populations drives lateral root branching and root hair proliferation from the first week of colonisation, creating a denser, more extensive root architecture that improves nutrient and water uptake efficiency measurably within 10–14 days of initial application.
Application, Timing and Compatibility
Apply Azos at transplanting by dusting directly onto moist roots or by pre-mixing into the root zone area of the growing medium. For cuttings, mix into the propagation medium at the point of cutting insertion. Use at 2.5g per plant as a root drench dissolved in water for established plants. Azos is compatible with most organic and mineral growing programmes. Do not combine with copper-based fungicides or strong chemical sterilants that would damage bacterial populations. Pair with Mykos mycorrhizal inoculant and Ecothrive Neutralise (to remove tap water chloramine before application) for a complete biological root inoculant system.
