A freshly taken cutting enters an immediately stressed state — it has lost its root water supply and must transpire through its leaves while producing the callus tissue and root initials that will eventually restore water and nutrient access. Reducing transpiration (through a high-humidity propagator environment) and supplementing nutrition through the leaf surface are the two complementary strategies for sustaining cutting health during this period.
