Description
Ecothrive Charge is a premium, nutrient-dense organic soil conditioner derived from naturally occurring insect frass — the composted waste of beetles in a controlled, certified facility. Insect frass is one of the most naturally complete organic soil amendments available, containing a balanced macro and micronutrient profile, chitin (the structural compound of insect exoskeletons that acts as a natural disease suppressor), and a diverse community of beneficial microorganisms that stimulate soil biology and plant immune responses. Adding Ecothrive Charge to your growing medium before planting transforms an ordinary substrate into a biologically active, naturally fertile growing environment from the very first watering.
Why Insect Frass Is an Exceptional Soil Amendment
Insect frass occupies a unique position in the world of organic soil amendments. Unlike composted plant waste or animal manures, frass contains chitin — a compound that plants recognise as a signal of insect or fungal attack. This recognition triggers the plant’s systemic acquired resistance (SAR) pathways, upregulating the defensive chemistry that makes plants more resistant to pests, diseases, and environmental stress. Studies have shown that chitin amendment significantly reduces susceptibility to a range of fungal pathogens and sap-feeding insects. Beyond this remarkable defensive benefit, frass contains a balanced, slow-release nutrient profile that feeds plants gently and continuously throughout the growing cycle. It is rich in the beneficial bacteria that drive nutrient cycling in the root zone. Ecothrive is a UK-based company with a strong research ethic, and Charge represents the best expression of their commitment to biological growing. At The Horticulture Company, Ecothrive Charge is one of our most enthusiastically recommended products for soil and coco growers who want to move toward living growing media.
How to Use Ecothrive Charge
Mix Ecothrive Charge into your growing medium at a rate of 1–2% by volume — approximately one to two litres per 50–100 litres of substrate. Mix thoroughly so the charge is evenly distributed throughout the growing medium rather than concentrated in a single layer. It can also be used as a top dressing around established plants and watered in with each irrigation. Charge is compatible with all organic nutrient programmes and with standard pH-adjusted water.
