Black vs White Top Plate — When to Choose Black

The GT 901 is available with either a white or a black top plate, and the choice affects system performance in specific situations. The black top plate absorbs rather than reflects incident light from your grow lamps, meaning the reservoir surface and net pot holes absorb rather than scatter light back upward toward the canopy. In grow environments where reflected light from white surfaces causes hot spots on lower foliage, or where growers prefer the visual appearance of black components in their grow room, the black plate is the preferred choice. Functionally, both colours are equally effective at preventing light from reaching the nutrient solution through the plate material itself — the key is ensuring all net pot holes are fully occupied or capped to prevent direct light entry.

Fitting and Maintaining the GT 901 Black Top Plate

The black plate seats onto the GT 901 reservoir body with the same friction fit as the white version — no tools or fixings required. Position it firmly around the full perimeter to eliminate gaps between plate edge and reservoir body. Clean the plate at each grow cycle change using a dilute bleach or Oxy-Plus solution to remove organic residue, mineral deposits, and algae from around the net pot holes. Inspect the plate for warping or cracking — black plastic can absorb more heat from grow room lamps than white, making it slightly more prone to thermal warping over time. Replace promptly if warping creates gaps that allow light entry.
