Description
Jiffy-7 Peat Plug 38mm is a professional propagation medium that we have been supplying to UK growers since 2017 for germinating seeds and striking cuttings with high success rates. Each Jiffy-7 pellet is a compressed peat-based disc that expands when moistened into a self-contained growing plug — complete with a fine netting outer cover that holds its shape and allows roots to penetrate freely when transplanting. The 38mm size is the standard format for general propagation use and accommodates both seeds and cuttings up to 5–6mm stem diameter.
Why Jiffy-7 Peat Plugs Work So Well for Propagation
Successful propagation requires a medium that holds moisture without waterlogging, provides adequate aeration for root initiation, and can be transplanted into the final growing medium without disturbing the developing root system. Jiffy-7 pellets achieve this through a carefully selected peat blend — naturally slightly acidic (pH 5.5–6.0), with an open structure that holds a moisture reservoir while maintaining air porosity around the developing root zone. The compressed format means each pellet stores flat and dry, taking up minimal storage space, and expands to its full volume in seconds when watered — expanding to approximately 4cm diameter and 4.5cm height. The fine mesh outer cover allows roots to penetrate the pellet boundary naturally at transplant time without any need to remove it, minimising transplant shock.
How to Use Jiffy-7 Plugs for Seeds and Cuttings
Soak each pellet in warm, pH-adjusted water (pH 5.8–6.2) until fully expanded — approximately 30–60 seconds. Allow excess water to drain before use. For seeds, make a small indentation in the top of the plug, place the seed and lightly cover. For cuttings, use a skewer to create a pilot hole before inserting the cutting to avoid damaging the stem. Keep plugs in a propagator at 22–26°C, 80%+ RH until roots emerge. Transplant directly into the growing medium when roots are visible at the plug exterior. Pair with Clonex rooting gel for cuttings and a Root !T heat mat for consistent bottom heat during germination and rooting.
