Description
pH TEST KIT (LIQUID) is the traditional, accessible pH measurement method that allows UK growers to check nutrient solution and water pH without electronic instruments, using liquid indicator reagent that changes colour in response to pH levels within the test range. We have been recommending pH test kits to UK growers since 2017 as a practical backup and entry-level pH monitoring solution for cultivators at all stages of growing experience.
How Liquid pH Testing Works and Where It Fits in Your Monitoring Toolkit
Liquid pH test kits work by adding a small number of drops of pH indicator reagent — typically a pH-sensitive dye solution — to a sample of the liquid being tested. The reagent changes colour in proportion to the hydrogen ion concentration (pH) of the sample, and the resulting colour is compared against a reference colour chart to determine the approximate pH. The advantage of liquid test kits over electronic pH meters is their simplicity, durability, and freedom from calibration requirements — there is no electrode to maintain, no buffer solutions to stock, and no battery to replace. The disadvantage is precision: liquid test kits typically resolve pH to 0.5 or 1.0 pH unit increments, compared to the 0.01 unit resolution of a good digital pH meter. This makes liquid testing appropriate for rough-and-ready checks and as a backup verification method rather than as the primary measurement tool for growers targeting the precise 0.1 pH unit management that high-performance growing demands.
When to Use the pH Test Kit and How to Interpret Results
Use the liquid pH test kit for quick checks of reservoir water, tap water source pH, and nutrient solution pH when your electronic pH meter is unavailable, being calibrated, or its reading seems suspect. Take a small sample of the test liquid in the test tube provided, add the specified number of drops of reagent, cap the tube, and compare the colour to the reference chart in natural light. Dispose of the test sample after reading — do not return it to the reservoir. Replace the indicator solution when it begins to show colour degradation or precipitation, typically after one to two years of storage. For precision pH management across your growing system, pair the liquid test kit as a backup with a Milwaukee or similar digital pH meter as your primary measurement instrument.
