Description
pH Probe Refill & Storage Solution KCl 300ml is a professional-grade potassium chloride (KCl) electrolyte solution that we have been supplying to UK growers since 2017 for maintaining, storing and refilling pH electrode probes. A well-maintained pH probe is one of the most important instruments in any hydroponic or soil growing operation — inaccurate pH readings lead to nutrient lockout, deficiencies and ultimately wasted crops. Using the correct KCl storage solution extends probe life significantly and ensures readings remain accurate over time.
Why KCl Solution Is Essential for pH Probe Maintenance
The sensing element of a glass pH electrode is a thin, hydrated glass membrane that must remain constantly moist to function accurately. When probes are stored dry, the glass membrane dehydrates — a process that causes irreversible drift and reduced sensitivity that cannot be corrected by calibration. KCl solution maintains the correct ionic environment around the glass membrane and the reference junction, preventing dehydration and keeping the probe in calibration-ready condition. For refillable probes, periodic replenishment of the KCl electrolyte in the reference chamber maintains the electrochemical bridge between the reference electrode and the sample — critical for stable, reproducible readings. Even for sealed probes, storage in KCl solution between uses dramatically extends usable probe life compared to water or buffer storage.
How to Use pH Probe Storage Solution
For storage between uses, fill the probe cap with KCl solution and fit over the electrode tip. Change the solution in the cap every 2–3 weeks. For refillable probes, locate the refill port (usually a small rubber plug near the top of the probe body) and use a syringe to introduce fresh KCl solution every 4–6 weeks or when the solution level drops below the reference junction. Before calibration or measurement, rinse the probe tip briefly in deionised or RO water, blot dry and calibrate using pH 4.01 and pH 7.00 buffers. Combine with pH 4.01 and 7.00 calibration buffer sachets and a quality digital pH meter for a complete pH management toolkit.
