Description

Pythoff is a targeted treatment product for Pythium root rot — the most damaging and difficult-to-reverse root disease in hydroponic growing, caused by water mould pathogens that thrive in warm, poorly oxygenated nutrient solution. We have been supplying Pythoff and other root health products to UK hydroponic growers since 2017 as a targeted intervention when root disease is identified and rapid action is needed to save a crop.

Understanding and Treating Pythium Root Rot

Pythium is not a true fungus but a water mould — an oomycete — that spreads through nutrient solution and infects root systems through the water rather than through the air. Infected roots turn brown, become soft and slimy, and lose their ability to absorb water and nutrients effectively. Above ground, affected plants wilt suddenly during the lights-on period despite appearing to have adequate moisture at the root zone — a characteristic symptom of Pythium that distinguishes it from drought stress or overwatering.

Pythoff addresses the pathogen directly through its active components, which disrupt the cellular processes of Pythium and related water mould pathogens without the systemic toxicity of conventional fungicides. Applied to the reservoir at treatment rates when root disease is identified, it reduces pathogen populations and creates conditions less favourable for continued spread through the system.

Integrated Treatment Approach

Pythoff is most effective as part of an integrated response to root disease. Simultaneously: lower reservoir temperature to below 20°C to reduce Pythium reproduction rate, increase dissolved oxygen through additional aeration, apply Pythoff at treatment dose, and remove severely affected root material if practical. Preventative management — maintaining clean reservoirs, adequate oxygenation and temperature control — is always preferable to reactive treatment.

Follow manufacturer guidelines for dosing and treatment interval. Compatible with most mineral nutrient programmes. After treatment, improve environmental conditions to prevent recurrence. A targeted intervention product for the serious hydroponics grower.
