SHOGUN Samurai Coco A&B is a premium two-part base nutrient specifically formulated for coco coir growing that we have been recommending to UK coco growers since 2017. Developed by SHOGUN’s R&D team with a detailed understanding of coco coir’s unique chemistry, Samurai Coco A&B delivers an optimised mineral nutrient profile calibrated to account for coco’s cation exchange properties — providing elevated calcium and magnesium ratios that prevent the deficiencies that plague growers using standard hydroponic nutrients in coco substrates. It is the foundation of SHOGUN’s coco grow programme and one of the most technically refined coco nutrients available to UK growers.

Why Coco Requires a Dedicated Nutrient Formulation

Coco coir is not simply an inert growing medium like rockwool or clay pebbles. It has a significant cation exchange capacity (CEC) — it binds positively charged nutrient ions (principally calcium and magnesium) and holds them in the substrate matrix rather than releasing them to the plant. This means that general-purpose hydroponic nutrients, formulated for inert media, consistently under-deliver calcium and magnesium when used in coco — even when EC and pH appear correct. SHOGUN Samurai Coco A&B is formulated with elevated calcium and chelated magnesium levels that satisfy the coco substrate’s CEC demand while simultaneously delivering plant-available concentrations at the root surface. The result is a complete, balanced nutrient supply without the calcium and magnesium deficiencies (tip burn, interveinal chlorosis) that are endemic in growers using non-coco-specific nutrients.

Feed Rates, Programme and Compatible Additives

Mix Part A and Part B at equal volumes — typically 2–4 ml per litre of each depending on growth stage — always diluting each part separately in water before combining in the reservoir. Never mix A and B concentrate directly. Use from first watering of young plants through to flush, adjusting EC from 1.0–1.2 mS/cm in early veg to 1.8–2.2 mS/cm at peak flowering.
