Description

Vermiculite V3 Medium Grade 100 Litres is a professional-grade horticultural vermiculite that we have been supplying to UK growers since 2017 for use as a growing medium amendment, propagation substrate and standalone rooting medium. Vermiculite is a naturally occurring mineral that expands dramatically when heated — the resulting lightweight, highly porous particles have exceptional moisture and nutrient retention properties combined with good aeration, making them one of the most useful and versatile materials in indoor and greenhouse horticulture. The V3 medium grade (2–4mm) is the most widely used size for general horticultural applications.

Why Vermiculite Is Indispensable in Propagation and Growing Media

Vermiculite’s unique properties come from its layered mineral structure, which traps air and water between its platelets. Each particle holds a significant water reservoir while maintaining air channels around it — the same wet-yet-aerated quality that makes perlite and coco coir valuable, but with the additional characteristic of a meaningful cation exchange capacity. This CEC means vermiculite holds and slowly releases nutrient ions, making it particularly valuable in seed germination mixes and cuttings media where a gentle nutrient buffer supports early root development without the risk of nutrient burn. Mixed with coco, peat or compost at 20–30% by volume, vermiculite opens the structure of heavy growing media, improving drainage and oxygen penetration. As a standalone medium for cuttings in humid propagators, it maintains the moist-but-aerated conditions that root initiation requires.

Application, Blending Ratios and Compatible Media

Use vermiculite V3 medium at 20–30% by volume when blending with coco coir, peat or compost-based growing media. For propagation, use alone or in a 50:50 blend with perlite as a cutting medium in propagation trays. For seed germination, blend 30% vermiculite with a quality seedling compost for improved drainage and aeration. Vermiculite is pH neutral and chemically compatible with all nutrient programmes. The 100-litre bag provides sufficient material for extensive blending across multiple crop cycles. Pair with CANNA Coco Natural or a quality peat-based compost and DYNOMYCO mycorrhizae for complete root zone management from the first watering.
