Fabric pots have revolutionised container growing for indoor growers who understand the direct relationship between root health and yield. Unlike standard plastic pots that force roots to circle when they reach the container wall, fabric pots allow air to penetrate through the permeable sidewall — dehydrating and naturally pruning root tips when they reach the edge, triggering the plant to produce abundant lateral roots instead. The result is a dramatically denser, more fibrous root mass that outperforms circling roots in any plastic pot.
The Science of Air Pruning
Air pruning is a natural process that occurs when roots encounter dry, oxygen-rich air at the container boundary. The root tip desiccates and stops growing forward, and the plant responds by producing multiple new lateral roots from behind the pruning point. Each of these lateral roots is then air-pruned in turn, producing an exponentially branching root network that fills the container with fine, highly absorbent feeder roots rather than a single spiralling root mass.
This dramatically increased root surface area improves nutrient and water absorption efficiency — plants in well-developed fabric pot root systems consistently show faster vegetative growth, better nutrient uptake efficiency and heavier yields compared to equivalent plastic-pot grows. The breathable sides also prevent the anaerobic soil conditions that build up in the base of non-draining plastic pots.
Fabric Pot Sizes and Use
We stock fabric pots from 1L propagation sizes through to 50L and beyond for large specimen plants. For a standard indoor growing cycle, 11L–15L fabric pots are ideal for soil and coco grows. Fabric pots dry out slightly faster than plastic due to evaporation through the sides — factor this into your watering schedule and check moisture levels more frequently during hot weather. Place fabric pots in saucers or on raised stands to allow drainage and prevent base saturation.
