Your extraction fan is the lung of your grow room — responsible for removing stale, hot and humid air and replacing it with fresh CO2-rich air from outside the growing space. Properly sized extraction ensures your plants receive the fresh air they need for vigorous photosynthesis while keeping temperature, humidity and CO2 levels within the optimal range. Centrifugal Inline Fans — Choosing the Right Size
Inline centrifugal fans use a rotating impeller to move air through ducting — they are the most common type of extraction fan in grow rooms. When sizing your fan, calculate the volume of your grow space (length × width × height in metres) and select a fan that can exchange this volume every 1–3 minutes. For a 1.2m × 1.2m × 2.0m tent (2.88m³), a fan rated at 200–300 m³/hr provides comfortable extraction with capacity to spare.
Always size up rather than down — a fan that is too large can be slowed with a speed controller, but an undersized fan running at maximum cannot be pushed harder. In hot summer conditions, your extraction needs increase as ambient temperature rises, so headroom in fan capacity is valuable.
