Description
The Bluelab pH Pen is the benchmark handheld pH meter for nutrient solution monitoring, trusted by growers from hobby-scale tent setups to large commercial greenhouse operations. Manufactured in New Zealand by Bluelab to the same exacting standards as the rest of their professional instrument range, the pH Pen delivers laboratory-grade measurement accuracy in a compact, waterproof, and durable handheld format designed for the daily-use conditions of a working grow room.
pH management is the single most impactful variable in nutrient availability across all growing systems. At pH values outside the optimal range — approximately 5.5-6.5 for coco and hydroponics, 6.0-7.0 for soil — key nutrient ions are progressively locked out of the plant’s root uptake system. Iron and manganese become unavailable above pH 7.0. Phosphorus availability peaks in the 6.0-7.0 range and falls sharply below 5.5. Calcium and magnesium absorption diminishes below pH 5.8. Even small, seemingly innocuous pH drift sustained over multiple irrigation cycles causes measurable deficiency symptoms.
The Bluelab pH Pen uses a high-quality double-junction glass electrode with resolution of 0.01 pH and accuracy to plus or minus 0.1 pH. One-point calibration using standard buffer solutions is straightforward and should be performed before each use session. The electrode requires storage in Bluelab KCl storage solution when not in use. Available at The Horticulture Company alongside pH buffer calibration solutions, KCl probe storage solution, pH Up and Down adjustment fluids, and the full Bluelab instrument range.
