How Hydrogen Peroxide Benefits Hydroponic Systems
Hydrogen peroxide (H₂O₂) breaks down into water and oxygen on contact with organic matter, making it a highly effective sterilant with no harmful residue. In hydroponic systems, adding H₂O₂ to the reservoir increases dissolved oxygen levels, which directly promotes healthy root development and inhibits the anaerobic bacteria and pathogens — including Pythium root rot — that thrive in low-oxygen, warm water conditions. At 11.9% concentration, this product is strong enough for effective use while remaining manageable with appropriate safety precautions.
Liquid Oxygen at this concentration can be used as a system sterilant between growing cycles, added to reservoirs during the grow at maintenance doses to support root health, or applied at higher concentrations to treat active root disease. Always follow the manufacturer’s dosing guidelines carefully — H₂O₂ is a powerful oxidiser and excessive concentrations can damage roots and beneficial microorganisms.
Safety and Handling
Handle with care. Wear gloves and eye protection when working with concentrated H₂O₂ solutions. Store in a cool, dark location away from direct light which accelerates decomposition. Do not mix with nutrients or additives before diluting in your reservoir. Keep out of reach of children.
Most effective in recirculating hydroponic systems including DWC, NFT and flood-and-drain. Note that H₂O₂ use is not compatible with beneficial bacteria products — choose one approach or the other for your root zone management strategy. Pair with air stones and quality air pumps to further maximise dissolved oxygen levels in your reservoir.
