Description
pH Buffer 4 is a precision calibration solution used to calibrate pH meters at the acidic reference point, ensuring accurate pH readings that are critical for correct nutrient management in hydroponic and soil growing systems. We have been recommending pH calibration products to UK growers since 2017 as an essential maintenance component for any grow room using digital pH measurement equipment.
Why Regular pH Meter Calibration Is Essential
A pH meter that has drifted out of calibration will give incorrect readings, causing you to adjust your nutrient solution to the wrong pH — a seemingly invisible problem that results in nutrient lockout, deficiency symptoms and reduced yields that appear to have no obvious cause. pH electrodes drift naturally over time due to electrode ageing, contamination and temperature changes — a meter that was accurate six months ago may be reading 0.3–0.5 pH units off today without any obvious indication that it has drifted.
Regular calibration using certified pH buffer solutions is the only way to maintain pH meter accuracy and catch calibration drift before it affects your crop. pH Buffer 4.0 — a bright red-coloured solution certified to pH 4.00 at 25°C — provides the acidic reference point for single-point calibration or as one of the two points in a two-point calibration procedure. Calibrating at both pH 4.0 and pH 7.0 provides a more accurate calibration across the full range than single-point calibration alone.
Calibration Procedure and Frequency
Calibrate your pH meter at the start of every growing cycle and whenever you suspect readings may have drifted. Rinse the electrode with clean water, dip into the pH 4.0 buffer, allow reading to stabilise, then press the calibration button on your meter. Repeat with pH 7.0 buffer for a two-point calibration. Store buffer solutions in sealed containers away from direct light. Do not pour used buffer back into the stock bottle — contamination will ruin the remaining solution.
Pairs with pH Buffer 7 and electrode storage solution for a complete pH meter maintenance kit. Essential for any grower using a digital pH meter as part of their nutrient management routine.
