When Calcium Deficiency Occurs and Why It Matters

Calcium is required for cell wall formation and structural integrity in rapidly growing plant tissue — without adequate calcium, new leaves develop distorted edges, growing tips curl, and in fruiting plants, the classic blossom end rot appears in developing fruit. In coco and DWC systems, calcium requirements are particularly high because the substrate or solution does not buffer calcium availability the way soil microbiology does, and high transpiration rates in well-lit grow rooms increase calcium demand at the leaf surface simultaneously. Growers using RO water must supplement calcium and magnesium in virtually every case — UK tap water typically supplies 80–120 ppm of calcium that RO removes completely.

Calcium is best absorbed at slightly higher pH (6.0–6.5) so ensure your pH is in the correct range when supplementing.
