Potassium’s Role in Flowering and When Supplementation Is Needed

Potassium is the macro-nutrient required in the highest absolute quantity during the flowering phase — it drives stomatal regulation, phloem loading, sugar translocation from leaves to flowers and the osmoregulation of rapidly expanding flower tissue. In coco coir growing, potassium presents an additional challenge: coco’s cation exchange sites have a high affinity for potassium and can sequester it from solution. While most standard bloom nutrients and purpose-formulated coco nutrients account for this, large plant canopies in extended flowering cycles, or high-performance cultivars pushing potassium demand beyond standard rates, can benefit from targeted mono potassium supplementation to maintain adequate supply without disrupting other element ratios by increasing the overall base nutrient dose. Potassium deficiency presents as marginal leaf scorch and necrosis on older leaves, with reduced flower density and poor bud hardness at harvest.

Application, Safety and Programme Notes

Always dilute thoroughly and add incrementally. Monitor total EC carefully — potassium chloride (KCl) and potassium nitrate (KNO₃) mono-nutrient products raise EC significantly at small volumes and can cause rapid nutrient excess if overdosed. For bloom boosting as part of a standard programme, a purpose-formulated PK supplement such as SHOGUN PK Warrior 9/18 or Mills Ultimate PK is generally preferable for most growers.
