Why CalMag Deficiency Is So Common in Indoor Growing

Calcium and magnesium are the secondary macronutrients most likely to become deficient in high-performance indoor growing. Calcium is essential for cell wall construction and integrity — deficiency first appears as tip burn, curling edges and browning of young growth. Magnesium is the central atom in the chlorophyll molecule; deficiency causes the characteristic interveinal yellowing (yellowing between the veins of older leaves while veins remain green) that many growers mistake for iron deficiency.

In coco growing, calcium and magnesium deficiency is structurally driven — coco’s cation exchange sites preferentially hold calcium and release it slowly, creating a chronic low-calcium condition at the root zone that base nutrients alone cannot always overcome.
