HAILEA HC-300A WATER CHILLER is the dedicated aquatic refrigeration unit that allows UK hydroponics growers to maintain optimal reservoir temperatures during warm summer months — one of the most important and most often overlooked aspects of DWC and recirculating system management. Why Reservoir Temperature Is Critical in DWC Systems

The optimal reservoir temperature for most hydroponic crops is 18–22°C. Above 24°C, dissolved oxygen levels in the solution drop significantly — warm water holds less dissolved gas than cold water — and the pathogenic water mould pythium, the cause of root rot, begins to proliferate rapidly in warm, low-oxygen conditions. UK summer ambient temperatures in grow rooms routinely push reservoir temperatures above 25°C even with good extraction, at which point growers running DWC or RDWC systems face the real risk of overnight root rot that can wipe out a crop in 48 hours. The Hailea HC-300A actively refrigerates water circulating through its titanium heat exchange coil, maintaining reservoir temperature in the 18–20°C target range regardless of ambient conditions.

Installation and Sizing for the HC-300A

The HC-300A is rated to chill up to approximately 300 litres of water effectively, making it suitable for DWC systems up to four to six sites or a single large RDWC reservoir of 100–200 litres. Connect the inlet and outlet fittings to a small submersible pump circulating reservoir water through the chiller at the recommended flow rate. Position the chiller unit outside the grow tent or in a cooler area where its internal compressor can dissipate heat effectively — placing it inside a hot tent reduces efficiency significantly. Run the chiller continuously or link it to a temperature controller set at 20°C for energy-efficient operation.
