Why Grow Room Timers Need to Be Rated for Inductive Loads

Consumer plug-in timers from general retail are typically rated for resistive loads — the steady current draw of a device at full operation. HID lighting ballasts and other inductive equipment draw a surge current at switch-on that can be 5–10 times the steady-state current, and this inrush occurs every single day of the growing cycle. A timer rated for resistive loads only will have its internal relay contacts progressively welded by the daily inrush until the contacts fail in either the open or closed position — either stopping the lights at a random point in the cycle or leaving them on permanently. Either failure is catastrophic for a photoperiod crop.
