Description
ROOT PRUNING POT 7.5 LITRE is the air-pruning fabric growing container that promotes exceptional root zone development through the biological response to root tip dehydration at the permeable fabric wall, creating a highly branched, dense root architecture that drives vigorous plant growth and maximises nutrient uptake capacity. We have been recommending root pruning pots to UK growers since 2017 as one of the most effective container upgrades available for soil and coco cultivation.
The Air Pruning Process and Why It Builds Better Root Systems
Air pruning occurs at the interface between the root tip and the low-humidity environment outside the fabric wall. When a root tip reaches the permeable fabric, water evaporates from the exposed root cells faster than the root can replace it through uptake, causing controlled desiccation of the tip. The plant responds by activating lateral root growth from the pruned point — multiple new branches develop from each pruned tip, each of which will air-prune when it reaches the fabric wall in turn. The cumulative effect across hundreds of root tips throughout the growing season is a root system of extraordinary density and branching complexity compared to the circular, root-bound growth pattern that occurs in solid-wall plastic pots. This root architecture provides dramatically more absorptive surface area per unit of root mass, enabling the plant to take up water and dissolved nutrients more efficiently from the available substrate volume. The 7.5-litre format is ideal for medium-sized plants grown through a complete cycle.
Substrate Compatibility, Drainage, and After-Harvest Care
Root pruning pots are compatible with soil, coco, and coco-perlite blends. The permeable fabric provides full-perimeter drainage that prevents waterlogging and promotes the wet-dry cycle that encourages root exploration. After harvest, remove substrate, wash the pot thoroughly with clean water, and allow to dry completely before storing or reusing. Fabric pots degrade with repeated washing over time — check for thinning, holes, or significant fabric degradation before each reuse and replace when integrity is compromised.
