Why Coco Nutrients Must Be Specifically Formulated

Coco coir has a unique chemistry compared to soil or inert substrates like rockwool. Its cell wall structure preferentially binds calcium and magnesium ions through cation exchange, meaning that standard hydroponic nutrients applied to coco create deficiencies in these critical elements even when solution EC appears adequate. A coco-specific nutrient like Alpha Coco A&B is formulated with elevated calcium and magnesium levels designed to both satisfy the coco substrate’s binding sites and deliver sufficient free calcium and magnesium to the plant. Using a standard hydroponic nutrient in coco is one of the most common causes of mid-grow calcium deficiency, tipburn, and blossom end rot that we see among our UK customer base.

Feeding Programme for Alpha Coco A&B

Use equal parts A and B throughout the vegetative and flowering cycle. Start at 3ml per litre of each part during early vegetative growth (EC 1.2–1.6), increasing to 4–5ml per litre per part for established veg (EC 1.8–2.2), and adjust to the same range during flowering with additional bloom boosters as required. Maintain pH between 5.8 and 6.2 for coco cultivation. Water daily or twice daily in established plants — coco performs best with frequent, small waterings rather than infrequent heavy drenches. The 5-litre pair provides excellent volume for a medium-scale grow through a full cycle.
