Description
AutoPot AquaValve (5mm) is the patented heart of the AutoPot irrigation system — the low-cost, gravity-fed valve that delivers nutrient solution to your plants automatically without any pumps, timers, or electricity. We have been recommending AutoPot systems to UK growers since 2017 as one of the most reliable and truly passive hydroponic growing methods available, and the AquaValve is the precision component that makes the entire system work. This version is fitted with a 5mm inlet for use with the newer AutoPot systems and replacement applications.
How the AutoPot AquaValve Works
The AquaValve uses a simple float mechanism to maintain a shallow reservoir of nutrient solution — typically 20–25mm — at the base of the growing tray. When the plant consumes this solution, the float drops, triggering the valve to open and allow more solution to flow from the connected tank. Once the level is restored, the float rises and closes the valve, stopping the flow precisely. This wet-dry cycle is ideal for plant health because it allows the root zone to oxygenate between watering events, preventing waterlogging and anaerobic conditions that lead to root pathogens such as Pythium. The system requires only gravity — the tank must be elevated above the trays — and works entirely without electricity, making it fail-safe, quiet, and extremely low maintenance. The AquaValve is constructed from food-grade, nutrient-inert materials that will not contaminate your solution or degrade under continuous exposure to mineral nutrient concentrates.
How to Install and Maintain the AutoPot AquaValve (5mm)
The AquaValve fits into the dedicated AutoPot tray lid, seating securely in the moulded valve housing. Connect the 5mm supply tube from your elevated nutrient tank to the valve inlet. Ensure the tank is positioned at least 20cm above the tray level to provide adequate pressure for reliable operation. Prime the system by filling the reservoir tank and opening the tap, then check that the valve opens and closes correctly by observing the tray as it fills. Clean the valve periodically by rinsing with clean water to remove any mineral deposits. Replace AquaValves every 1–2 grows as a preventative measure to ensure continued reliable operation.
The AutoPot AquaValve is compatible with all AutoPot tray systems including the Easy2Grow and XL Tray setups. Browse our full AutoPot range for complete systems, spare parts, and compatible nutrients and growing media.
